What Else You Can Use Right Now

- T-Mobile or Verizon 5G Home Internet. I tried T-Mobile’s gateway for about a month before Starlink. If you already get decent cell signal at your house, it’s worth testing first. - Fixed wireless (Rise Broadband and similar regional providers). If a local company has a tower with a clear line of sight to your property, this can actually beat satellite on latency. It’s worth a quick search for providers in your specific county, since availability is very hit or miss.
- HughesNet or Viasat. These are the older, geostationary satellite options, and they’re cheaper up front. The tradeoff is latency in the 500 to 800ms range, which you’ll feel immediately on a video call or in any online game. I’d only recommend these if Starlink genuinely isn’t available where you live.
- A mobile hotspot as a stopgap. Not a long-term fix, but if you need something working today while you sort out the rest, an LTE or 5G hotspot from your phone carrier can hold you over.
My honest advice, the same thing I tell my neighbors when they ask: check if you get any usable cell signal at your house first. If you do, test a 5G home plan before you spend money on satellite equipment. If you don’t, or if it’s unreliable, that’s when Starlink starts to make real sense.
Would I Switch Back?
Honestly, no. If fiber showed up on my road tomorrow, I’d think hard about it, mostly for the lower cost and the total absence of weather-related hiccups. Fiber internet still wins on raw value where it’s available.
But it’s not available here, and for two years, Starlink has been the difference between feeling cut off and feeling like everyone else. The customer support situation is genuinely frustrating when something breaks, and I won’t pretend otherwise. Everything else, the speed, the reliability, the lack of contracts, has held up better than I expected going in.
